Last night (January 3, Vietnam time), Al Nassr officially introduced Cristiano Ronaldo as their new player in front of more than 25,000 fans at Mrsool Park, their home ground.
After being released by Manchester United seven months early, CR7 surprisingly joined the team currently leading the Saudi Pro League with a contract lasting 2 and a half years until June 2025. He is set to earn an annual income of up to 200 million euros, according to the Portuguese newspaper Correio da ManhaDuring the press conference introducing him to his new club, Al Nassr, Ronaldo shared the reasons behind joining the West Asian team: "In Europe, I have achieved everything. For me, coming here (Al Nassr) is a great opportunity in football, but also to change the mindset of the new generation. I had many opportunities in Europe, several clubs in Brazil, Australia, the USA, and even in Portugal tried to sign me. But I have placed my trust in this club."
"It's a good challenge; I know what I want and what I don't. It's also a great opportunity to develop various aspects, including women's football at Al Nassr. I want to contribute to a different image for the club and this country (Saudi Arabia)," Ronaldo said.
Also, during the press conference, coach Rudi Garcia (Al Nassr) revealed that he always wanted to coach Ronaldo. The French coach disclosed, "Ronaldo is an example. My goal (as a coach) is to make him happy."
"Coaching Cristiano will be one of the easiest things because there's not much to teach him. I want to leverage his experience to help the club win."
Coach Rudi Garcia also added that he needs time to talk to the Portuguese star, but the most important thing at the moment is for CR7 to start training early to synchronize well before playing for Al Nassr.
Meanwhile, when appearing before 25,000 Al Nassr fans, Ronaldo expressed with pride: "I am a unique and record-breaking player. Playing for this club is a great opportunity. This contract is unique, but I am also a unique player, so coming here is entirely normal."
"I came here to win, to enjoy. I want to be a part of the success of this country and its culture. When wearing the Al Nassr jersey, I want to enjoy and play football.Facing criticism from anti-fans who disparage his move to a less renowned league solely for "aging retirement" and financial gain, CR7 responded vehemently to the detractors. "They don't know anything about football. All teams aim to win."
"Look at the World Cup 2022. The only team that defeated the reigning champion (Argentina) was Saudi Arabia. South Korea and Costa Rica also played exceptionally well. It's not easy to win any match. Joining Al Nassr is not the end of my career; I don't care what people say. I have a responsibility, and I am happy here. This league (Saudi Pro League) still maintains a high level of competitiveness.According to Fox Sports, Ronaldo could potentially make an appearance in the match where Al Nassr hosts Al Tai at home in the 12th round of the Saudi Pro League at 10:00 PM on January 5 (Vietnam time).
However, CR7 has not taken the field since his last match on December 11, when he and the Portugal national team suffered a 0-1 defeat against Morocco in the quarterfinals of the World Cup 2022. Therefore, fans might have to wait until January 15 when Al Nassr faces Al Shabab in the 13th round of the Saudi Pro League at Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium to witness Ronaldo's official debut for the new team.
