Billion Dollar Whale: How Jho Low Stole $4.5 Billion and Fooled the World

This was not an armed robbery. There were no masks, nor was there a getaway in a high-speed car. The largest theft in the history of modern finance was carried out using spreadsheets, complex banking structures, and hundreds of bottles of Cristal champagne. Jho Low, a modest-looking student from Malaysia, created an illusion of wealth so convincing that it was believed by Hollywood’s biggest players, powerful banks, and heads of state.

The Architect of Illusion: Beginnings at Wharton

The key to Jho Low's success was born at the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton). As described by the authors of the book Billion Dollar Whale, Low understood even as a student that in the world of big money, perception is more important than reality. He borrowed money from friends and investors to organize lavish parties, inviting the children of influential politicians and businessmen. It was there that he met the stepson of the future Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak. This relationship became the "master key" to the treasury of an entire nation.

The Theft Mechanism: The 1MDB Fund

In 2009, thanks to the Prime Minister’s patronage, the 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad) fund was established. Officially, it was intended to build schools and roads. In reality, it became Low’s "private ATM."
The mechanism for siphoning off the money was incredibly sophisticated:

  • Shadow Companies: Low set up companies with names almost identical to legitimate institutions (e.g., Abar Investments PJS Limited). A one-word difference in the name allowed billions of dollars to be transferred to accounts controlled by Low, while auditors believed the money was going to sovereign wealth funds in Abu Dhabi.
  • Global Laundromat: The money circulated between the Seychelles, Switzerland, Singapore, and the Cayman Islands. Each bank saw only a fraction of the transaction, making it impossible to connect the dots.
  • The Role of Goldman Sachs: One of the world’s most powerful investment banks helped the 1MDB fund issue billions of dollars in bonds, turning a blind eye to numerous red flags. The bank later had to pay record fines (approx. $5 billion) for its involvement.

The Conquest of Hollywood and "The Wolf of Wall Street"

Jho Low knew that the fastest way to legitimacy in the US was through show business. Using the stolen billions, he founded Red Granite Pictures. He produced Martin Scorsese’s film The Wolf of Wall Street—the height of irony, considering that a film about financial fraud was funded by the largest fraud in history.
Low "bought" the loyalty of stars with unimaginable generosity:

  • Leonardo DiCaprio: Received paintings by Picasso ($3.2 million) and Basquiat ($9 million) from Low, as well as Marlon Brando’s Oscar statuette. After the scandal broke, the actor had to return all these items to FBI agents.
  • Miranda Kerr: The model received jewelry worth $8 million, which she later handed over to investigators (reportedly in Tupperware containers).
  • Vegas Parties: During one birthday night, Jho Low spent $5 million. Kanye West performed on stage, and Britney Spears jumped out of a cake.

The Fall and Political Earthquake

In 2015, the scandal came to light thanks to an investigation by journalist Claire Rewcastle Brown and publications in The Wall Street Journal. The affair led to the collapse of the Malaysian government.
Prime Minister Najib Razak was sentenced to 12 years in prison (the sentence was later commuted). Malaysia recovered some of the assets, including the luxury yacht Equanimity ($250 million) and Low’s private jet.

Where is Jho Low? Latest Leads (2024–2025)

Despite an Interpol Red Notice, Jho Low has remained elusive since 2015. Recent reports from 2024 and 2025 suggest that:

  • New Identity: Low is likely residing in China (Shanghai or Macau). According to investigative reports, he uses a forged Australian passport under the name Constantinos Achilles Veis.
  • Loss of "Golden Passports": In 2024, Cyprus officially revoked his citizenship, which Low had purchased in 2015 through investments in luxury real estate.
  • Resources: Despite the freezing of billions of dollars, it is estimated that Low still has hundreds of millions at his disposal, hidden in cryptocurrencies and accounts to which Western investigators have no access.

Jho Low remains a symbol of the era of "kleptocracy," in which the global financial system allowed one man to rob an entire nation to impress the Hollywood elite.
