Splinterlands | Rebirth

As one of the early players of Splinteralnds, I confess that Rebirth is one of the newer rulesets, and I am still getting my strategy around it. I love the rule, and I have won many battles, but sometimes the opponent just comes up with a gameplan so novel, it makes me wonder where I let up.

The rule works quite well when you have self healing monster in the lineup. It works even better when there are monsters with martyr-ability in the lineup. There are numerous strategies possible, but the latter is what I most love.

How about taking a look at the ruleset and one of my battles? But before that, shall we spend a minute getting to know Splinterlands? After all, that’s where you will find all these fun battles, rules, and monsters.

What Game is Splinterlands?

Splinterlands is a digital card game that allows you to collect, trade, battle, rent, and even earn from the cards. ***The game gives Play to Earn a whole different meaning.*** By now, you would know that the governance token (SPS) airdrop made millionaires out of the early adopters. It still keeps giving and remains a fun and engaging game.

To give you an idea of how lucky you can get in Splinterlands, read my story of getting cards worth $500 from buying only a few packs worth $20.

Got Cards Worth $500 from $20 Packs

And this is just a tiny number. I have witnessed people getting uber-expensive cards in their pack and selling them for as high as $6500. In fact, there is a whole Splinterlands marketplace on the Hive blockchain and now on Wax too. And now the sales of the Rebellion packs, the newest of the lot, have also started.

Rebirth| What Strategy Do I Love?

I mentioned earlier that when the rebirth rule is coupled with the martyr-ability, the resulting gameplay is just magical. The martyr-ability is where when a monster dies, it gives an increase in all stats to the monster next to it. So, if we place a card with the martyr-ability in the second to fifth position, it could enhance the stats of two cards at the same time.

Now, imagine what happens during rebirth. When the monster with martyr-ability dies the first time it enhances the stats of the nearby monsters. Because of rebirth, it comes back and then dies once again. What happens then? The adjacent monsters get a bump-up in stats once again. So, the same cards enhance the adjacent monsters’ stats twice.

It gets crazier if the adjacent monsters are self-healing. Even more crazier, if the adjacent monsters are self-healing, dual attacking, and have blood-lust ability (read Quora Towershead). And craziest if there is a summoner or monster with last-stand ability. I mean, there is literally, a basket of strategies you can come up with.

Here is one that I came up with, only to find that the opponent had an even better strategy. Let’s look at it.

The Battle | Frowns and Angry Brows

A quick look at the rule, and let’s get on with the battle.

There were two rules in play – the rebirth rule and the fury rule. The strategy of using the monster with martyr-ability was a given. But I messed up a bit. Since the fury-rule was also in play, I was not supposed to use a taunt-monster. Why? Because they get twice the attack when the fury rule is in play.

And, guess what, I did take a taunt monster. Worst still paired it with a martyr-ability monster.

The Face-Off Screen

The opponent chose the Water Splinter while I went with the Death Splinter.

We see the opponent’s team on the top while mine is at the bottom of the screen. My monster in the second position is the taunt monster, and it is going to be pummelled real bad. Just in case, you didn’t notice, it already got one stats enhancement from the monster in the first position dying once (martyr-ability monster). And now, let’s watch what happens.

We Battle Hard

At the beginning of round 4, my lineup started to fall apart.

The opponent’s attack took out my taunt monster in the first position and the one in the second position. That left the rest of my field to battle the opponent. This itself was testimony that things were looking bleak.

Also, notice that the opponent’s martyr-ability monster in the second position had already perished once, giving the monsters in the first and third positions an enhancement in stats. It won’t matter if it dies a second time since my lineup won’t stand till then. 😊

And The Battle Races to Conclusion

By round 8, it was game over.

My monsters were in a hurry to die despite the rebirth-rule in play. 😊 Kudos to the opponent for placing his/her monsters in the right place. You would notice that the opponent’s martyr-ability monster had perished and enhanced the stats of the monsters in the first and second positions (earlier in the third position).

That’s how well the martyr-ability coupled with the rebirth rule works!

Though, I lost. ☹

A Hard-Fought Battle | A Known Result

I thought it would be an easy win for me, but I misread the fury-ability. My team selection, therefore, was a mess. Anyway, all these battles are real learning experiences, and I love it, nonetheless. So, that’s it from me.

I hope you enjoyed reading about the battle. Do take a look at the battle live in the link provided below. Enjoy!
