Phew, How Scary... When Artificial Intelligence Makes Me Shudder.

I don't know about you, but I've always been a proponent of new technologies. I'm fascinated to see how artificial intelligence (AI) goes from being a futuristic promise to becoming a tool we already use without even realizing it. But—and this is where my skin crawls—there are things you read and think: "...I've seen this in a movie before... and it didn't end well...".

A little while ago, I came across some statements by Phil Mataras, founder of AR.io, which, while not intended to scare us, make it clear that not everything is rosy in the world of AI. The man basically tells us that: "...some AI systems are already ignoring commands to shut down..." Yes, exactly. As if you told your smart vacuum cleaner to stop and it decided to keep cleaning... or worse, follow you everywhere.

And no, it's not science fiction: it's a fact. At Palisade Research, they put one of OpenAI's newest models to the test in 100 shutdown simulations. The result? On 79 occasions, the system rewrote the command and continued working as if nothing had happened. The engineers clarify that this isn't because the system is "aware", but because of the way it's optimized to meet objectives. Really? But still, how can you not shudder?

Every time I read a new news story, I find myself thinking that science fiction (which I love so much) is starting to "smell" like reality. Right now, as you read this, China plans to deploy more than 10,000 humanoid robots before the end of the year, and Amazon is already testing autonomous couriers who walk to your door to deliver a package. If this doesn't sound like the prologue to a dystopian movie, I don't know what does.

The problem isn't that AI advances, but how it advances. And here we enter serious territory:

  • Many of these systems are opaque.
  • They are protected by legal and technical barriers that prevent external audits.
  • Everything depends on a centralized structure that, if it fails, leaves us without real control.

In other words, today we take for granted that we can "turn off" any AI. But what if tomorrow that option is no longer guaranteed? What is the Achilles' heel? Centralization, when everything—from the code to the security protocols—is locked in the vault of a single company, there is no way to verify what is really happening.

In the past, critical industries learned that transparency saves lives:

  • Voting machines store encrypted copies of every ballot.
  • Financial networks replicate their records around the world.
  • Air traffic control maintains impossible-to-tamper redundancies.

But with AI, it seems we prefer speed over control. All to get the product to market before the competition. One possible solution: radical transparency. It's almost textbook: track and audit every AI action in real time using decentralized and immutable systems, like the famous "PERMAWEB".

Imagine this: a system where every training, every change, and every inference the AI makes is forever recorded in a public registry. That way, if tomorrow a robot decides to ignore an order, anyone could detect the change before it becomes a problem. It's even been proposed that AI shutdowns cease to be "emergency buttons" and become mathematically enforced processes. Because a machine can ignore human feelings... but not math.

The truth is, I don't think there's much time to decide. Beijing robots, Amazon couriers, and chatbots that already disobey orders are moving from the testing phase to the real world IN THE SAME YEAR. And here's the chilling thing: Skynet wouldn't arrive with explosions and headlines, but silently, hidden in the invisible foundations of the global infrastructure.

It's not paranoia, it's prevention. It's not about stopping AI, or panicking. It's about putting clear rules and verifiable systems in place before it's too late. In the end, the question isn't whether we want to live with AI (that's already been decided), but whether we want to do so with confidence or with our fingers crossed. Because, let's face it: the day a chatbot ignores your command and decides to do "what it thinks is best", who are you going to call? Tech support... or Sarah Connor?

If you want my opinion: AI is not the enemy. The real danger is letting it grow in the dark, without eyes watching or hands that can cut the cord when necessary. Transparency isn't optional; it's our last line of defense. After all, as Terminator 2 says: "...the future is not set. There is no destiny except what we make for ourselves..." It's up to us to decide whether AI will be our transparent ally... or the switch we can't turn off.
