Confederations Cup: Plateau and Rivers draw Libyan rivals

19 Oct 2022

In the first round of CAF Confederation Cup qualifying, Rivers United and Plateau United of the Nigeria Professional League were paired against Libyan opponents.

Rivers United, the NPFL champions, will play Libya's El Nasr Benghazi, and Plateau United will play Al-Akhdar, another team from that country.

The 16 teams that advanced from the Confederation Cup's second preliminary round faced the 16 teams that were eliminated from the CAF Champions League's second preliminary round in the additional second preliminary round of the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup draw.
On Tuesday, the draws were held at the CAF's headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
After losing to Wydad Casablanca of Morocco and Esperance of Tunisia for CAF Champions League group stage tickets, Rivers and Plateau both fell into the second-tier competition.

Both clubs will host the first legs of the matches, much like their failed Champions League bid, before traveling to Libya for the second leg.

On November 2, El Nasr Benghazi will be played by Rivers United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, and Al-Akhdar will be played by Plateau United at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
