Lauren Mayberry, of the band Chvrches, has a solo record coming out September 1st. I'm very interested. Matt Berninger of the National has collaborated with Chvrches a couple times. There's also a video of Lauren singing with The National at a festival. Matt stepped away from The National to do a solo record AND after this past album I wouldn't be surprised if The National actually is done for a little while. I think Matt said before this record the band was leaning that way.
Anyway, when Matt did his solo stuff it really seemed like he was getting a lot out that National albums were starting to get into but he wasn't able to fully do it and that's why I think "The First Two Pages of Frankenstein" is the final chapter of The National and the album Matt wanted to make for 20 years.
This solo record I think will be Laurens way of doing the same. She’s mentioned a lot in interviews about the “sad lyric content coming from somewhere.”
But Matt’s voice is perfect for narrative storytelling. Lauren, however, has been making pop music for 10 years — which has me wondering if this is the point of a solo album for her. “Whimsical acoustic” songs haven’t been her style or even really storytelling. Most Chvrches songs are more about abstract thoughts, concepts or life situations.
So I’m interested to see what Lauren produces on her own.
