My Journey to a New Phone

At long last, I have managed to purchase a new phone....

After a solid five years and six months of using my old device, I finally decided it was time for an upgrade. It wasn’t an easy or cheap decision—I’m paying half of the price plus processing fee for nine monthly installments. The price was higher than I expected, mainly because the sales assistants persuaded me to pick a more expensive model than I originally planned.

The big upside? The phone is a recent release, which means it comes with the latest features and performance improvements. Plus, it came bundled with a free powerbank, which turned out to be a blessing during a recent power outage. That little addition made the purchase feel more worthwhile.

My phone is the Realme 14T 5G. While some might call it affordable, for me, this was quite the splurge. My previous phone cost around $100, and this one was almost triple that amount. I went in planning to spend about $200, but the sales team’s enthusiasm convinced me to upgrade. I paid the down payment in cash and now have the commitment of paying off the rest over nine months.

Sometimes I question if this investment was truly necessary—it’s just a phone, after all. But one of the sales assistants told me I deserved a superior phone for personal use, framing it as an early birthday gift to myself. That idea stuck with me.

While I'm excited about my upgrade, I do wonder if I should have gone for a cheaper phone to save more for groceries or other essentials. Still, I believe in the importance of self-care and treating myself well. If I don’t invest in myself, who will?
