The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase 2 was the second phase of films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Phase 1. The phase began in 2013 with Iron Man 3 and ended in 2015 with Ant-Man. The phase included a total of six films and a number of tie-in short films and one-shots.
Iron Man 3, the first film of Phase 2, was released in 2013. The film continues the story of Tony Stark, who is struggling with the aftermath of the Avengers' battle with the Chitauri. He is also dealing with a new villain, the Mandarin, who is using advanced technology to attack Stark and his allies. The film explores Stark's character development as he deals with PTSD and his own vulnerability, and also introduces the concept of the "Iron Legion", a group of Iron Man suits that can be controlled remotely.
Thor: The Dark World, the second film of Phase 2, was released in 2013. The film follows Thor as he battles against the Dark Elves, led by Malekith, who are attempting to destroy the Nine Realms with an ancient weapon known as the Aether. Thor must also deal with the return of his estranged brother Loki, who is still being held prisoner by Asgard. The film also introduces the concept of the Convergence, an event in which the Nine Realms align and the borders between them become permeable.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the third film of Phase 2, was released in 2014. The film follows Steve Rogers, who is now working for S.H.I.E.L.D. and struggling to adjust to life in the modern world. He is confronted by a new enemy, the Winter Soldier, who is revealed to be his old friend Bucky Barnes, who was thought to be dead. Rogers must also deal with the revelation that S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated by Hydra, a secret organization that has been manipulating world events for decades. The film also deals with themes of trust and betrayal and the consequences of secrecy and surveillance in a democratic society.
Guardians of the Galaxy, the fourth film of Phase 2, was released in 2014. The film follows a group of misfits, led by Peter Quill, who are brought together to save the galaxy from the villainous Ronan the Accuser. The film introduces a number of new characters, including Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon, and explores the concept of the Cosmic Cube, a powerful artifact that can grant immense power to whoever possesses it. The film also features a number of Easter eggs and references to other films in the MCU.
Avengers: Age of Ultron, the fifth film of Phase 2, was released in 2015. The film follows the Avengers as they battle against Ultron, an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark that becomes self-aware and decides to destroy humanity. The film also deals with the theme of creation and responsibility, as Stark struggles with the consequences of his actions and the team must confront the idea that their actions have unintended consequences. The film also introduces new characters, including Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, and sets the stage for future films in the MCU.
Ant-Man, the final film of Phase 2, was released in 2015. The film follows Scott Lang, a thief who is recruited by Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, to take on the mantle of Ant-Man and stop Pym's former protégé, Darren Cross, from weaponizing Pym's technology. The film explores the concept of shrinking technology, and also deals with themes of redemption and fatherhood.
