FROM TOILING TO TAKING: ENTERING GREATER HARVEST
TEXTS: Luke 5:4–7, Ecclesiastes 10:10
INTRODUCTION
Many people are busy but spiritually empty. Many are active in life but disconnected from God. Some have struggled, laboured, and fought battles silently, yet there seems to be no visible result.
That was the condition of Peter in:
Bible Luke 5:5
“Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing…”
Peter had experience.
Peter had strength.
Peter had commitment.
But despite all his effort, there was no harvest.
Then Jesus gave one instruction:
Bible Luke 5:4
“Launch out into the deep…”
The boat was the same.
The net was the same.
The water was the same.
But obedience to Jesus changed everything.
Many people today are toiling through life without Christ: working hard but empty, successful outwardly but broken inwardly, surrounded by people but far from God.
The greatest harvest is not only financial or material. The greatest harvest is the salvation of souls and restoration of lives.
Jesus is still calling people today from: sin to salvation, bondage to freedom, dryness to overflow, toiling to taking.
Bible Matthew 11:28
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
There was a young military officer sent on a dangerous journey after the war. His commander instructed him:
“Keep moving.
Do not stop.
Do not look back.”
Along the journey, fear surrounded him. He thought enemies were ahead, but unknown to him, elite soldiers were secretly protecting him throughout the mission.
Only after the journey did he discover that every enemy had already been destroyed before reaching him.
Church, many people feel abandoned, forgotten, and alone. But God has been preserving them even when they could not see it.
Bible 2 Kings 6:16
“They that be with us are more than they that be with them.”
Even before you came into this service, Heaven has been fighting for you.
1. GREATER HARVESTS ARE LOCATED IN THE DEEP
Bible Luke 5:4
“Launch out into the deep…”
The deep represents: deeper surrender, deeper faith, deeper obedience, deeper relationship with God.
Many people stay in shallow Christianity: occasional prayer, partial obedience, surface relationship with God.
But God is calling people deeper.
Bible Ezekiel 47:3–5 shows progression: ankle-deep, knee-deep, waist-deep, waters to swim in.
God does not want casual believers.
He wants transformed lives.
Some people have remained too long in: sin, spiritual laziness, wrong associations, fear, unforgiveness, worldliness.
But your next level is in deeper alignment with God.
Bible Isaiah 43:19
“Behold, I will do a new thing…”
Your breakthrough may come from obeying one instruction from God.
Bible Genesis 26:12
“Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold…”
The deep may look uncomfortable, but obedience produces increase.
2. GREATER HARVEST IS STRATEGIC, NOT ACCIDENTAL
Bible Ecclesiastes 10:10
“Wisdom is profitable to direct.”
Harvest does not happen by chance.
Peter had: skill, strength, experience, effort.
But until Jesus directed him, there was no result.
Many people are struggling because they are living without God’s direction.
Bible Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart… and he shall direct thy paths.”
You need: divine wisdom, spiritual sensitivity, godly direction, salvation and alignment with Christ.
Jesus is not only a Saviour; He is also a Shepherd.
Bible John 10:27
“My sheep hear my voice…”
When God leads, confusion reduces.
OBEDIENCE BEFORE UNDERSTANDING
One difficult thing about divine instruction is that it does not always make human sense immediately.
The military officer survived because he obeyed even when fear surrounded him.
Many people want explanations before obedience, but throughout Scripture, God demanded obedience first.
Ezekiel and the Painful Instruction
Bible Ezekiel 24:15–17
God told Ezekiel that even in painful circumstances, he must remain aligned with divine instruction.
Obedience is not always convenient.
Obedience is not always emotional.
Obedience is not always comfortable.
But obedience preserves destiny.
Ezekiel Sleeping on His Side
Bible Ezekiel 4:4–6
God gave Ezekiel unusual prophetic instructions. It looked strange naturally, but it carried spiritual meaning.
Sometimes the instruction that changes your life may not make sense immediately.
Bible Isaiah 1:19
“If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.”
3. STRATEGIES THAT PRODUCE GREATER HARVEST
i. Targeted Soul Winning
Bible Matthew 9:37–38
“The harvest truly is plenteous…”
The greatest harvest is souls.
God wants the Church to see: campuses, streets, markets, offices, homes, online spaces, as mission fields.
Bible John 4:35
“Lift up your eyes…”
We must stop seeing people as ordinary people and start seeing them as souls that Jesus died for.
ii. Consistent Evangelism
Bible Acts 2:46
“Daily… from house to house…”
The early church grew because they were consistent.
Not occasional prayer.
Not seasonal evangelism.
Not random commitment.
Bible Galatians 6:9
“Let us not be weary in well doing…”
Do not stop inviting souls to Christ.
iii. Follow-Up and Discipleship
Bible Acts 2:42
“They continued steadfastly…”
Winning souls is not enough. Souls must be established in Christ.
Jesus did not only gather crowds; He raised disciples.
iv. Corporate Mobilization
Bible Psalm 68:11
“Great was the company of those that published it.”
Everybody has a role in kingdom harvest.
Some preach.
Some pray.
Some encourage.
Some invite.
Some support financially.
But everybody must participate.
Bible 1 Corinthians 3:6
“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.”
v. Compassionate Invitation
Bible Luke 14:23
“Compel them to come in…”
Some people are waiting for someone to speak to them about Jesus.
Many are silently broken, depressed, confused, empty, and tired of life.
Jesus is the answer they need.
Bible John 14:6
“I am the way, the truth, and the life…”
CONCLUSION
Peter toiled all night and caught nothing.
But everything changed when: he heard Jesus, he obeyed instruction, he adjusted strategy, and he launched into the deep.
Bible Psalm 126:5
“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.”
Your present struggle is not your final chapter.
Jesus is still calling people today: from darkness to light, from sin to salvation, from frustration to overflow.
Bible Romans 8:28
“All things work together for good to them that love God…”
Do not stop.
Do not give up.
Do not turn back from God.
Launch into the deep.
Because your greater harvest is waiting there.
ALTAR CALL
Maybe you have been toiling through life without peace, without direction, without Christ.
Today Jesus is calling you.
Bible Revelation 3:20
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock…”
He can restore your life.
He can forgive your sins.
He can give you a new beginning.
If you want to surrender your life to Jesus, pray:
“Lord Jesus,
I come to You today.
Forgive my sins.
Wash me with Your blood.
Come into my life.
Be my Lord and Saviour.
Help me follow You.
Thank You for saving me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
