What Do Experts Say?
Parents are wondering if the popular YouTube Channel and Netflix show 'CoComelon' is bad for children. Read on to see what the experts say.

With all the different streaming services and content on the internet, it can be difficult to determine what your child should and shouldn't watch. The area can get even darker when your child likes a show that you're not sure is good for him or her.

That's exactly the problem with popular YouTube channel CoComelon, which has its own Netflix show. Some parents believe the show is overstimulating, leading them to wonder whether CoComelon is bad for children.

CoComelon is a well-known children's cartoon featuring nursery rhymes, bright colors and diverse characters with the aim of educating and entertaining. Both the program and the YouTube channel are watched with great admiration by children all over the world.

However, over the past year, parents have begun to share their concerns about the program on social media. Most of the concerns relate to "overstimulating" scenes and the series' potentially addictive qualities, according to Ann Arbor Family.

A few moms even shared stories about how their kids reacted when the program was shut down. In a Reddit thread titled " CoComelon overstimulation ," parents shared their experiences with epic meltdowns and tantrums, with one commenter even saying their son was "turning into a monster."

It is important to note that some people experienced harsh reactions, while others reported that their children were completely fine after the program was shut down. One parent shared her experience: “We never had a meltdown about the lockdown. He also stopped watching and now wants other programs to be made instead.”

Obviously all children are affected differently during and after the show.

Like most things in life, there's no yes or no answer to whether kids should watch CoComelon. Many experts share the benefits but also encourage moderation; Ultimately, this is a choice every family makes.

If you're using the program as an educational resource, pediatricians from the University of Michigan shared that it's important to remember that not all programs described as "educational" are actually that way. Ann Arbor Family says the best way for young children to learn is to sing and play with caregivers, not through a screen.

This doesn't necessarily mean that programs like CoComelon should be completely banned; It means it should only be used to support face-to-face learning.

A psychologist shared with the Ann Arbor Family that the repetition of music from the show can actually provide educational value. Visual and auditory learning can be incredibly beneficial for many children.
