In 1848, a group of students from various colleges at Cambridge met to establish a set of standardized rules for the game. This group became known as the Cambridge Rules, and their rules would become the basis for the modern game of football.
The Cambridge Rules established a standardized field size, the number of players on each team, and the use of a round ball. The rules also banned the use of hands and the carrying of the ball. Instead, players were only allowed to kick the ball or head it.
The game quickly gained popularity and spread throughout England. The first football club, Sheffield FC, was founded in 1857, and the first football association, the Football Association (FA), was established in 1863.
