Benjamin Géza Affleck, born on August 15, 1972, is an American actor and filmmaker. His career began in childhood with roles in the PBS educational series "The Voyage of the Mimi" (1984, 1988). He later appeared in the independent comedy "Dazed and Confused" (1993) and in several Kevin Smith comedies, including "Chasing Amy" (1997).
Affleck gained widespread recognition when he and Matt Damon won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for writing "Good Will Hunting" (1997), in which they also starred. He then became known as a leading man in studio films such as the disaster film "Armageddon" (1998), the action crime thriller "Reindeer Games" (2000), the war drama "Pearl Harbor" (2001), and the thriller "The Sum of All Fears" (2002). Despite a career downturn, Affleck made a comeback by portraying George Reeves in the biopic "Hollywoodland" (2006), winning the Volpi Cup for Best Actor.
His directorial debut, "Gone Baby Gone" (2007), which he also co-wrote, was well received. He followed this with directing and starring in the crime drama "The Town" (2010) and the political thriller "Argo" (2012), both of which were critical and commercial successes. For "Argo," Affleck won the BAFTA Award for Best Director, as well as the BAFTA and Academy Award for Best Picture. He then starred in the psychological thriller "Gone Girl" (2014) and portrayed the superhero Batman in the DC Extended Universe. Affleck also starred in the thriller "The Accountant" (2016) and the sports drama "The Way Back" (2020). Additionally, he had supporting roles in the dramas "The Last Duel" (2021), "The Tender Bar" (2021), and "Air" (2023), the latter of which he also directed.

Benjamin Géza Affleck-Boldt was born on August 15, 1972, in Berkeley, California. His family relocated to Massachusetts when he was three years old, initially residing in Falmouth, where his younger brother Casey was born, before settling in Cambridge. His mother, Christopher Anne "Chris" Boldt, was an elementary school teacher educated at Harvard, while his father, Timothy Byers Affleck, was an aspiring playwright who struggled with unemployment, working various jobs sporadically.
Affleck's childhood was marked by his father's severe alcoholism, which led to his parents' divorce when he was 11 years old. His father's struggles with alcoholism persisted, eventually resulting in homelessness for a period of time. At the age of 16, Affleck's father entered a rehabilitation facility in California, where he remained for twelve years, working as an addiction counselor to maintain his sobriety.
Raised in a politically active and liberal household, Affleck and his brother Casey were immersed in the arts from a young age, regularly attending theater performances and encouraged to pursue their own creative endeavors. Affleck's early exposure to acting led to his first professional role at the age of seven. Despite his mother's hopes that he would pursue a more stable career, Affleck continued to pursue acting, fueled by his passion for the craft.
During his high school years at Cambridge Rindge and Latin, Affleck was inspired by his drama teacher and formed a close friendship with fellow student Matt Damon. Together, they pursued acting opportunities, eventually moving to New York City for auditions. Affleck's academic performance was inconsistent, and after a brief stint at the University of Vermont, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting full-time, briefly studying Middle Eastern affairs at Occidental College.
Affleck's journey from his tumultuous upbringing to his eventual success in Hollywood is a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome obstacles in pursuit of his dreams.

Ben Affleck's journey in acting began at a young age, with his first appearance in an independent film at the age of seven. His childhood acting experiences were not driven by familial ambitions for stardom or financial gain but rather by happenstance. He found early success as the star of the educational PBS series "The Voyage of the Mimi," which he worked on from ages eight to fifteen, both in Massachusetts and Mexico.
After high school, Affleck briefly pursued acting opportunities in New York before attending Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he also directed student films. He landed various small roles in television and film, including appearances in ABC after-school specials, television films, and commercials. Notable roles during this period included playing a high school bully in Richard Linklater's "Dazed and Confused" and a supporting role in the cult classic "School Ties."
Affleck's breakout came with his role in Kevin Smith's "Chasing Amy," which showcased his acting range and led to further collaboration with Smith. His performance in the film earned critical acclaim, paving the way for more substantial roles. He starred in "Good Will Hunting," a film he co-wrote with childhood friend Matt Damon. The screenplay, inspired by their own experiences growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, earned them an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, catapulting Affleck into stardom and making him the youngest writer ever to win an Oscar for screenwriting at the age of 25.
Affleck's early career was marked by a mix of comedic and dramatic roles, demonstrating his versatility as an actor and writer. His success with "Good Will Hunting" opened doors for him in Hollywood and set the stage for his subsequent accomplishments as both an actor and filmmaker.
