  • Ancient Origins:

In the mid-19th century, Hanson Gregory, a ship captain, is often credited with giving doughnuts their iconic ring shape. As the story goes, he punched a hole in the center of the dough to make it cook more evenly, creating the classic ring-shaped doughnut we know today.

Doughnuts have evolved globally with various countries creating their own versions. In some places, they are filled with cream or jam, while others are coated with sugar, glaze, or icing. Cultural variations have led to a wide array of doughnut styles around the world.

Nutella Filled Donuts Recipe;


Ingredients:

For the Doughnuts:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg


For Frying:

  • Vegetable oil (enough for deep frying)


For Coating:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon


For Filling:

  • Nutella (approximately 1 cup)


Instructions:

  • Activate the Yeast:

In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Sprinkle the yeast over the mixture and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  • Prepare the Dough:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the softened butter and egg to the activated yeast mixture. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, and mix until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  • First Rise:

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.

  • Roll and Cut the Dough:

Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a round cutter to cut out doughnut shapes and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.

  • Heat the Oil:

Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pan to 350°F (175°C).

  • Fry the Doughnuts:

Carefully place a few doughnuts at a time into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides. This should take about 1-2 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

  • Coat the Doughnuts:

In a shallow bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon. While the doughnuts are still warm, roll them in the sugar-cinnamon mixture until well coated.

  • Fill with Nutella:

Once the doughnuts have cooled slightly, use a piping bag or a small knife to fill each doughnut with Nutella. Insert the piping tip or knife into the side of the doughnut and squeeze or spread Nutella into the center.

  • Serve and Enjoy:

Serve the Nutella-filled doughnuts immediately and enjoy the deliciousness!
