The Psychology of a bull run

Good morning/evening

If you've been in crypto for any amount of time, you'll probably know exactly what I mean when I say that a bull run doesn't just change your portfolio, it changes the way you think. It starts off innocently enough, Bitcoin begins climbing, Ethereum follows, and before long even those random altcoins you forgot you owned are suddenly showing green. You log into your portfolio expecting the usual disappointment, only to discover you've made more in a day than you normally earn in a week. We can all feel like geniuses then!
That's when the psychology starts to kick in.
The funny thing is that nothing has really changed overnight, the technology is the same, the projects are the same and the risks are still there, yet somehow your brain starts convincing you that you're now an investing genius lol.

When I first got into crypto, every green candle felt like proof that I'd made the right decision. It didn't matter whether I'd spent weeks researching a project or bought something because I thought it was the next big thing (It was not!) If the price went up, I convinced myself I'd made a brilliant investment. Some of my ALTs did well, the ones I took profits on........... But honestly a lot of crap projects went up in the bull run and sometimes you have to make a quick decision, sell or wait. It may not be that the ALT coin was as good as I thought it was, in reality the market was simply lifting almost every boat. It had nothing to do with the days of research I did, if I look at some of those tokens now, they are not building or improving, they are just doing nothing and probably never will.

Social media certainly doesn't help either, suddenly your X feed, YouTube recommendations and every crypto website become full of experts. Everyone apparently predicted the latest move. Everyone has the next hidden gem. Every thumbnail has somebody pulling a shocked face next to a chart pointing straight up. This token is the next 100x, this project can only go up, rocket emojis everywhere! It becomes almost impossible to avoid and even if you tell yourself you won't get caught up in the hype, after seeing the same message for the hundredth time you start wondering if maybe they're right.
That's FOMO doing exactly what it's designed to do, the fear of Missing Out is probably responsible for more bad crypto decisions than almost anything else. There is also another strange thing that happens during a bull run and that is that your expectations quietly change, at the beginning, making a 20% gain feels incredible but a few months later, 20% feels disappointing. You see the pictures of the 100x 1000x that people have made, but what they do not show you are the 30 bad tokens they had before that, the losses and the failures.

It is hard to keep the greed in check, I had a 'when it doubles take some out' plan, which worked when I did it, other times I thought ahh this is going up more, only to see a spectacular dip! Am I the only one who finds selling harder than buying? Nobody wants to be the person who sold too early, but equally, nobody wants to watch life changing gains disappear because they were waiting for just one more pump.
It all looks so clear when you look back, everyone said last cycle would be different, they said there would never be another bear market, it was not IMO just the cycle doing what it does. In all honesty it is quite relaxing to not be checking the portfolio all the time, I am content with my holdings, I am not looking for the next big thing, the biggest psychological challenge is remembering why you invested in the first place! A bull market has a habit of making sensible people do slightly silly things.

Fear can make you sell too low.
Greed can make you buy too high.
Excitement can make you ignore risk.
Panic can make you forget why you invested.
None of those emotions improve your portfolio.
Experience helps, but we are all still human and at the end of the day emotions can get the better of us.

I know we have had some movement of late in the markets, but I am still expecting a pull back, I could be wrong of course but I am hoping to not make any silly mistakes this time round either, we shall see, only time will tell because knowing and actually following the plan are two different things.........
Do you have trouble keeping your emotions in check? Even knowing these things now when everything is calm, can all go out the window in the bull run.....Or is that just me?
As always, thank you for reading and please feel free to comment.
