Eddie Aikau is a Hawaiian legend - he lost his life on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, doing the job he loved - being a lifeguard.
One treacherous day on Oahu’s North Shore, he drowned trying to save the life of someone in trouble in the ocean.
Eddie was also a great surfer and in his memory, a bunch of world renowned surfers from around the world are invited to participate in the Eddie Aikau Invitational, which is scheduled over the winter months in Hawaii - November to March.
Unfortunately, conditions haven’t been favourable to hold the event for the past number of years - the swell size needs to be 20foot (Hawaiian Size) for the entirety of competition.
There have been plenty of close calls to run the competition, but often with the huge swells in Hawaii, they come and go quite quickly - even last Wednesday it was scheduled to run, however at the last minute it was called off, annoying organisers and participants alike.
The contest status is still on yellow alert, meaning it could be run over the next couple of weeks if the potential storms develop the massive waves required.
