Yes, People Really Get Paid to Chat With Lonely Foreigners
Okay, so this one surprised me when I first heard about it. There are apps where people get paid just to chat with lonely people in other countries. Not a big company, not a fancy job. Just you, your phone, and a lot of conversations.
The people doing it are called chatters, and some of them share their payout screens online. I put together a few so you can see what they look like. Fair warning: I can't verify any of these, so take them as examples, not promises.
976,042 diamonds, about $195. This chatter has 976,042 diamonds in their account, which the app says is worth around $195. Their screen also has a star rating and some performance scores. I'll get into those tomorrow, because they matter more than you'd think.
37,300 points, about 201 euros. Here, one point is worth one Japanese yen. So 37,300 points comes to about 201 euros. The app also says payment can take up to 5 business days, so it's not instant.
13.84K credits, about $138. This one is simple: 100 credits equals $1. This balance shows about $138. But you can't just cash out whenever you like. The app says you need at least 2,000 credits first.
$140.09 total for April. This is the one I found most interesting. It shows a full month of withdrawals, and the total is $140.09. Look closely and you'll see it's a bunch of smaller payments, mostly between $19 and $34. Not exactly get-rich-quick.
Before you get excited
A screenshot only shows that a payout screen exists. It doesn't tell you how many hours someone worked, or whether their money is typical. Some people also post big numbers to pull others in, so always look at the small ones too.
And please, if you ever try something like this, never give your personal details or send money to anyone you meet on a chat app.
