Zoey Deutch, born on November 10, 1994, is an American actress, the daughter of director Howard Deutch and actress-director Lea Thompson. She gained prominence for her roles in various films and television series.
Deutch's career began with appearances on the Disney Channel comedy series "The Suite Life on Deck" (2010–2011) and The CW crime drama series "Ringer" (2011–2012). Her credited film debut came in the gothic romance "Beautiful Creatures" (2013), followed by a starring role in the fantasy horror film "Vampire Academy" (2014), which earned her a Teen Choice Award nomination.


She continued to make appearances in films like "Everybody Wants Some!!" (2016), "Before I Fall" (2017), "Flower" (2017), "Rebel in the Rye" (2017), and "The Outfit" (2022), for which she received a British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 2017, she starred in the comedy-drama film "The Year of Spectacular Men," directed by her mother, Lea Thompson, and also co-produced by Deutch.
Her notable film roles include "Why Him?" (2016), "Set It Up" (2018), "Zombieland: Double Tap" (2019), "Buffaloed" (2019), and "Not Okay" (2022). Additionally, Deutch gained recognition for her performance in the Netflix comedy series "The Politician" and the romantic comedy film "Set It Up."


Zoey Deutch was born on November 10, 1994, in Los Angeles, California, to actress Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch. She has one sister, Madelyn Deutch, who is also an actress. Her family includes her maternal grandmother, musician Barbara Barry Thompson, paternal grandfather, music executive Murray Deutch, and great-uncle actor Robert Walden. Deutch's father is of Jewish heritage from New York, while her mother, from Minnesota, has partial Irish ancestry. Zoey Deutch identifies as Jewish and had a bat mitzvah.
She began taking acting classes at the age of five and attended Oakwood School, Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and the Young Actors Space. She pursued theater as a major at L.A. County High School for the Arts.


Zoey Deutch began her acting career in 2010 at the age of 15, with a role on the Disney Channel original series The Suite Life on Deck as Maya, Zack Martin's love interest during the third season. From 2011 to 2012, she portrayed the recurring character of Juliet Martin in The CW thriller drama Ringer. Deutch made her big-screen debut in Mayor Cupcake (2011), appearing alongside her mother and sister.


Although she filmed a scene for The Amazing Spider-Man, it was ultimately cut from the final release, though included on the DVD version. Her breakthrough in film came with the supporting role of Emily Asher in the 2013 fantasy-romance-drama Beautiful Creatures, alongside Emma Thompson, Thomas Mann, and Alden Ehrenreich. The film was based on the young adult novel of the same name by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
During this time, Deutch also appeared in television shows such as NCIS, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, ABC Family's Switched at Birth, and Marc Cherry's television pilot Hallelujah.


In 2014, Zoey Deutch starred as Rosemarie Hathaway in Vampire Academy, based on the first book of the best-selling young adult series written by Richelle Mead. This marked her first appearance as a lead in a film. Her performance in the movie was praised by Jordan Hoffman of the New York Daily News as a breakout lead performance.
Following this, Deutch was set to star as the lead opposite Tyson Ritter in Randall Miller's Midnight Rider, a biopic of Gregg Allman. Additionally, she joined the cast of the teen coming-of-age comedy Good Kids, released in October 2016. Deutch also landed the lead role in the rom-com Cover Girl, directed by Julie Plec and Sue Kramer. She starred in the official music video for the song "Opium" by The New Division alongside Avan Jogia.


In 2016, Deutch portrayed Beverly in Richard Linklater's Everybody Wants Some!!, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival. She was essentially the only female lead in the film, paired with freshman ballplayer Jake Bradford, played by Blake Jenner. Deutch also appeared in Dirty Grandpa alongside Robert De Niro and Zac Efron, playing the love interest to Efron's character. Additionally, she starred in Why Him? alongside James Franco, Bryan Cranston, and Megan Mullally, portraying a Stanford student who falls in love with a billionaire, Laird, played by James Franco. Deutch's next role was in the crime drama Vincent-N-Roxxy, alongside Emory Cohen, Emile Hirsch, and Zoë Kravitz, which premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.


Zoey Deutch's career continued to soar with significant roles in various films and television series. In 2017, she starred as Samantha "Sam" Kingston in Before I Fall, an adaptation of Lauren Oliver's best-selling young adult novel. Her performance in the film was lauded, with Andrea Mandell of USA Today describing it as a milestone in her rising career. She also starred in Rebel in the Rye, portraying Oona O'Neill opposite Nicholas Hoult, Kevin Spacey, and Laura Dern. Deutch's performance in the crime drama Flower, directed by Max Winkler, was particularly acclaimed, with critics praising her "electric lead performance." She also appeared in her mother Lea Thompson's directorial debut The Year Of Spectacular Men and shared the production credit for the film.


In 2018, Deutch starred in the Netflix romantic comedy Set It Up alongside Glen Powell. She also appeared in the drama-comedy The Professor alongside Johnny Depp. Additionally, she joined the cast of Ryan Murphy's web television comedy series The Politician on Netflix, alongside Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow.
The following year, Deutch starred in Zombieland: Double Tap, the sequel to the zombie comedy Zombieland, receiving positive reviews for her performance. She also appeared in the drama film Buffaloed directed by Tanya Wexler.


Deutch continued to diversify her roles, appearing in various projects such as the Quibi television series adaptation Home Movie: The Princess Bride in 2020 and lending her voice for the character Lily in the adult animated comedy series Fairfax, premiering on Amazon Prime Video in 2021. She also starred in Graham Moore's directorial debut The Outfit alongside Mark Rylance and Dylan O'Brien, and joined the cast of Not Okay, a satire feature film released on Hulu.


In addition to her film and television work, Deutch appeared in the music video for "Anyone" by Justin Bieber in 2021. She also took on producing roles, such as in the Amazon Original film Something From Tiffany's, co-produced by Reese Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine, based on the Melissa Hill novel.
Deutch's career continued to thrive with new projects in the pipeline, including roles in Juror #2, purported to be Clint Eastwood's final directorial effort, and Anniversary alongside Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler, both announced in May 2023.
