The silver key felt warmer now, as though it had absorbed her decision. Emma held it tightly, her thumb tracing its smooth edges while the stranger lingered in the shadows, waiting without a word.

She turned to the chamber’s far wall, where a second door loomed. It was taller, heavier than the first, carved with symbols she did not recognize. Strange markings twisted across its surface, shapes that seemed to shift under the flickering firelight.

Her heart pounded as she slid the key into the lock. A metallic echo filled the room, sharp and final. The door groaned open, revealing not freedom—but another chamber.

This one was different. The air was warmer, scented faintly with incense. Candles lined the walls, their flames steady despite the draft. In the center of the room stood a table draped in velvet, and upon it, a mirror. Its frame was gold, elaborate, almost regal.

Emma approached slowly. The mirror reflected her face, pale and tense, but as she stared longer, her reflection began to change. It was her—but not the woman she knew. This version of Emma was unburdened, fearless, her eyes burning with an intensity she had never seen before.

Behind her reflection stood the stranger. Yet in the glass, his face was not shadowed—it was clear, visible, and disturbingly familiar.

Emma gasped and stumbled back, breaking the illusion. The mirror returned to normal, showing only herself and the dimly lit chamber. But the image lingered in her mind, sharp as a blade.
“What did you see?” the stranger asked, his tone calm but edged with curiosity.
Emma’s lips parted, but no words came. She wasn’t ready to confess—not yet.

The stranger studied her, then nodded as if he already knew. “Every door demands a truth. You’ve opened this one. Now the question is whether you’ll face what it shows.”

Emma looked back at the mirror. She didn’t know if she had the strength to face that fearless version of herself—or the stranger who seemed to know her more intimately than anyone should.
But the mansion gave no escape. The next step was hers to take.
