Mahendra Singh Dhoni, popularly known as MS Dhoni, is a former Indian cricketer and captain who is regarded as one of the greatest captains in the history of Indian cricket. He was born on July 7, 1981, in Ranchi, Bihar (now Jharkhand), India.

Dhoni started playing cricket at a young age and made his debut for Bihar in the Ranji Trophy in 1999-2000. He later moved to Jharkhand and made his debut for the state in the 2003-04 season. He caught the attention of the cricketing world with his performances in the 2004-05 season, where he scored 680 runs at an average of 68.

Dhoni made his international debut for India in December 2004, in an ODI against Bangladesh. He made an immediate impact, scoring 148 in just his fifth ODI against Pakistan in 2005, which is still his highest score in ODI cricket. He was soon named as the captain of the Indian cricket team for the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007, which India went on to win, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final.

Dhoni became the captain of the Indian team in all formats of the game in 2008, and he led India to many memorable victories, including the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, and the 2007 ICC World Twenty20. He was known for his calm and composed demeanor on the field, and his ability to make tough decisions under pressure.

Dhoni retired from Test cricket in December 2014, but continued to lead the Indian team in limited-overs cricket until January 2017, when he stepped down as captain. He retired from international cricket in August 2020, finishing his career as one of the most successful captains in the history of Indian cricket.

In addition to his achievements as a cricketer, Dhoni is also known for his philanthropic work, particularly in the field of education. He has set up the Mahendra Singh Dhoni Charitable Trust, which runs a school in his hometown of Ranchi.

Dhoni is regarded as a role model and an inspiration to many young cricketers in India, and his legacy in Indian cricket is assured for many years to come.
