Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle, a British writer and physician, created the iconic character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of his four novels and fifty-six short stories featuring Holmes and Dr. Watson.

The Sherlock Holmes stories, considered milestones in the field of crime fiction, have left an enduring impact. Doyle's extensive literary output goes beyond the Holmes tales, encompassing fantasy and science fiction stories centered around Professor Challenger, humorous narratives about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels.

In addition to his renowned detective series, Doyle demonstrated prolificacy as a writer. Notable among his works is the early short story "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), which contributed to popularizing the mystery of the Mary Celeste. Here are some of his best works:

  • Sherlock Holmes Series:

  • "A Study in Scarlet" (1887)

  • "The Sign of the Four" (1890)

  • "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (1892)

The same source points out that in 1885 he was describing himself on the brass nameplate outside his house, and on his doctoral thesis, as "A. Conan Doyle" (Stashower 70).
