The Jollof That Remembered
Aunty Bisi in Terminus Market made the best jollof in Jos. People would queue from 11am. But her secret wasn’t just the spices.
Every plate she served, she’d whisper something to the rice before dishing it.
One day Chinedu, a broke student, bought a plate for ₦500. As Aunty Bisi dished it, he heard her whisper: “Remember where you came from.”
He laughed it off. Ate the rice. Went for exam that afternoon.
Question 1 on the paper? Exact topic he’d ignored while “hustling”. But somehow, he remembered every detail he’d read 3 months ago. Nailed it.
Next day he came back. “Aunty, what did you say to the rice?”
She just smiled and whispered to his new plate: “Remember who believes in you.”
That semester Chinedu graduated with a First Class.
Years later he became a professor. Still goes back to Terminus Market. Still gets the whisper. Still remembers.
Some jollof doesn’t just fill your stomach. It fills your destiny.
