The first game, Red Dead Redemption, was set in the Wild West of 1911, near the border between the US and Mexico. Our main character, John Marston, was a former member of the Van der Linde gang. The second game, RDR2, takes place 12 years before the first game, in 1899. If we try to draw a little timeline;

  • 1865 marks the beginning of The Wild West Era, a period of lawlessness.
  • In 1872, The Pinkerton Agency was established to regulate this lawless life (Edgar Ross, who we talked about in the first game, is a member of this organization).
  • In 1878, the Van Der Linde gang was founded. Dutch Van der Linde and Hosea Matthews are the two most important names. Our protagonist Arthur is one of the first to join the gang at the age of 15.
  • In 1885, John Marston also joins this gang. He meets Abigail in the gang.
  • 1889. Red Dead Redemption 2 begins.
  • 1911. Red Dead Redemption begins.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, we have the opportunity to learn details about the Van der Linde gang. As we know from the first game, the leader of the gang is Dutch and he appears from the beginning of the second game and plays an important role in the story.

However, our main character is not Dutch, but Arthur Morgan.

Red Dead Redemption 2, which proceeds with a chapter-shaped storytelling, makes a very impressive start in the very first scenes. The game starts in extremely cold weather and we learn that the gang tries to pull off a robbery but fails. Dutch tells the gang members, who take shelter in a house they find, that they will stay here for a few days, and that they should make this place a camp to keep warm. I should also mention that these scenes of the game reminded me of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, which was released in 2015, both because of the chapter progression and the snowy scenes.

Dutch, the leader of the gang, is initially portrayed as a man whose ambition is to make a big score and use the money to provide a comfortable life for every member of the gang. Since Dutch already knows that the lawless Western life is coming to an end, he is in a sense obsessed with a big heist for his retirement and as we witness throughout the game, he always says that the next heist will be the last.

In the first scenes where we look around to see if we will see John Marston from the first game, we see John's wife Abigail and his son Jack in this gang. In addition to Dutch Van Der Linde, John Marston, Abigail Marston, Jack Marston, Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella, Hosea Matthews, Arthur Morgan, and Micah Bell, the members of the gang we know from the first game.

When we get our first mission from Dutch, we realize that we will control the character of Arthur Morgan in the game.

Dutch is not much older than Arthur Morgan, but he still treats Arthur like a son. We can even say that Dutch draws a father figure at the beginning. Arthur is both the most skillful man in the gang and Dutch's right-hand man.

As a result of our first missions, we rescue a woman named Sadie Adler who has been taken hostage by the O'Driscoll gang.

The next day, Abigail says that her husband John Marston hasn't returned after two days and she's afraid that he's dead, so we get the mission to find John and we find him dying with a wound on his face and we bring him to the house where the gang has taken refuge. This is the first reference to the wound on John's face. I didn't expect to see John so early in the second game, so I was surprised.

We try to pull off the first train robbery that Dutch has set his mind to. We find out later that we robbed the train of a man named Leviticus Cornwall, who has hired The Pinkerton Agency to find the robbers.

In the Valentine district, we are tasked with rescuing Micah Bell and Sean, members of the gang. After successfully completing these missions, we do another train robbery with John Marston.

While Arthur Morgan is fishing by the river with John Marston's son Jack, Andrew Milton, a member of The Pinkerton Agency, and his sidekick Edgar Ross (whom we recognized from the first game) arrive and try to make a deal with Arthur to have him capture Dutch.

Arthur does not accept this offer and immediately talks to Dutch, informing him about the conversation that The Pinkerton Agency's men had with him and trying to warn Dutch. In return, the gang has to relocate at various intervals and set up camp in different places. Dutch tries to reassure Arthur by reminding him of his purpose, telling him that they are trying to make a decent life for themselves, but Arthur Morgan responds nervously that we are thieves. He slowly begins to feel uncomfortable with some of Dutch's irresponsible behavior, but he can't protest too much.

I'll upload the rest tomorrow, so don't forget to follow me!
