Gerard Butler, born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, is the youngest of three children born to Margaret and Edward Butler, who worked as a bookmaker. He hails from a Catholic family with Irish heritage. When Butler was just six months old, his family relocated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. However, following his parents' separation a year later, his mother returned to Scotland with Gerard, who was then 18 months old.
Growing up, Butler attended St. Mirin's & St. Margaret's High School in Paisley, where he served as head boy. He later earned a place at the University of Glasgow School of Law. During his teenage years, he also participated in the Scottish Youth Theatre. Butler had a strained relationship with his father and didn't reconnect with him until he was 16 years old, which was a deeply emotional experience for him.

Tragically, Butler's father was diagnosed with cancer when Gerard was 22 years old and passed away. Reflecting on this period, Butler expressed how it profoundly affected him, leading him to question the value of life.
Before completing his final year of law school, Butler took a year off to live in California, where he lived in Venice Beach, held various jobs, and traveled extensively. During this time, he struggled with alcohol-related issues and was even arrested for disorderly conduct. Recalling this period, Butler acknowledged his reckless behavior and justification for it as youthful exuberance.
Despite his tumultuous experiences, Butler returned to Scotland to complete his law degree. However, he continues to deal with the effects of ear surgery he underwent as a child, which resulted in a mangled ear, tinnitus, and hearing loss in his right ear.

After his dismissal from the law firm in Edinburgh, Butler's determination to pursue a career in the spotlight led him to London at the age of 25. However, his initial attempts to break into acting were met with challenges, and he found himself working odd jobs to make ends meet, including waiting tables, working as a telemarketer, and demonstrating toys at fairs.
In London, Butler crossed paths with a casting director who was a former acquaintance from his days in the Scottish Youth Theatre. This connection proved to be pivotal, as she invited him to audition for Steven Berkoff's production of Coriolanus. Butler's audition left a strong impression on the director, who was struck by his energy and enthusiasm, leading to Butler securing a role in the ensemble.

At 27, Gerard Butler landed his first professional acting gig. Less than a year later, he secured a part in a theatrical adaptation of Trainspotting at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival. By the age of 30, he made the bold decision to relocate to Los Angeles, where his persistence paid off as he began to secure roles in notable productions such as Dracula 2000, Tomb Raider 2, Dear Frankie, and The Phantom of the Opera. This marked the beginning of Butler's ascent in the world of acting, where he would go on to achieve international recognition and acclaim.

Gerard Butler's journey in London involved a variety of odd jobs before landing acting roles. His breakthrough came when he was cast by actor and director Steven Berkoff in a stage production of Coriolanus. Additionally, he portrayed Renton in the stage adaptation of Trainspotting, a play that inspired him to pursue acting.
His film debut occurred in 1997, playing Billy Connolly's character's younger brother in Mrs. Brown. Butler continued to build his career with small roles in notable productions such as Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and Tale of the Mummy (1998). In 2000, he achieved breakthrough roles as Attila the Hun in the miniseries Attila and as Dracula in Dracula 2000.
Subsequently, Butler appeared in various films including Reign of Fire (2002), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003), and Timeline (2003). He gained attention for his portrayal of the Phantom in Joel Schumacher's adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera (2004), despite having limited musical experience.

Butler's career reached new heights with his role as King Leonidas in the epic film 300 (2006), which showcased his dedication to intense physical training. He continued to star in a diverse range of films, including romantic comedies like P.S. I Love You (2007), action thrillers like Olympus Has Fallen (2013), and animated films like How to Train Your Dragon (2010) where he voiced Stoick the Vast.
Beyond his acting career, Butler has been involved in various projects, including songwriting and recording an album. He also faced challenges, such as a hospitalization after being pulled under big waves while filming Chasing Mavericks in 2011. Despite setbacks, Butler remained dedicated to his craft, continuing to deliver compelling performances on screen.
