The Last Letter in Topeka
Maya found an envelope tucked inside her grandma’s old cookbook. No stamp. Just "66603" scribbled on it — central Topeka, near Washburn University where grandma taught.
Inside was a letter from 1987, addressed to a student who’d missed graduation. "You worked too hard to quit now. Come back in the fall. - Dr. R"
Maya didn’t know who it was for. But that Saturday she walked to Washburn, left the letter at the alumni office, and wrote on the back: _"If this finds you, thank you for not giving up."_
Two weeks later, a reply came to her address. A photo of a nurse in scrubs, standing in front of a hospital in Dallas, TX.
On the back: _"That was me. I did come back. And I’m still saving lives. Thank you."_
Some letters are 40 years late. But they still arrive right on time.
