The Night Guard Who Heard His Name 🌃
There was a night guard called Emeka. He worked at one big school in Lagos.
Every night, 12am, he would do rounds with his torch and cutlass. The school was quiet. Too quiet.
One `Ezi abalị`, around 2am, he was walking past the classroom block.
Then he heard someone whisper: `Emeka...`
He stopped. Looked around. Nobody.
He continued walking.
5 minutes later: `Emeeeeka...` louder this time. From inside classroom 3B.
Emeka’s heart started beating. He opened the door with his torch. Empty desks. Chalkboard. Nothing.
He was about to leave when he heard it again, right behind his ear:
`Emeka, water the plants.`
He turned sharply. Nobody. But the plant pots in the corner were all dry and dying.
Emeka remembered. The old gardener who died 3 months ago was also called Emeka. And he always watered those plants before he passed.
The next night, Emeka brought a bucket of water. He watered all the plants.
As he finished, he heard a soft voice: `Daalu, Emeka.`
After that night, he never heard his name again. But the plants grew green. And anytime people asked why the school garden was the best, Emeka would just smile and say: `Somebody asked me to water them.`
*Moral:* Sometimes the dead don’t come to scare you. They come to remind you of work that was left undone. Do good, even for people who can’t thank you.
