WebRTC: What Is It And Why Should You Care If You Use Cryptocurrencies?

WebRTC stands for Web Real-Time Communication, a technology that allows real-time communication between web browsers, without the need to install any additional software. Sounds great, right? Well, not so much if you are a cryptocurrency user, since WebRTC can reveal your real IP address, even if you use a VPN or a proxy.

A WebRTC breach occurs when a malicious website or attacker takes advantage of WebRTC functionality to obtain your real IP address, without your consent or knowledge. This can happen in several ways, but the most common is through the use of a protocol called STUN (Session Traversal Utilities for NAT), which is used to establish the connection between browsers. The problem is that STUN can request your local IP address and your public IP address, and send them to a remote server. This means that even if you use a VPN or proxy to hide your public IP address, your local IP address will still be visible. And if your local IP address matches your public IP address, then your anonymity will be completely compromised.

By having this type of leak, your privacy and security will be at risk, especially if you use cryptocurrencies. By revealing your real IP address, attackers can obtain sensitive information about you, such as your geographic location, your internet provider, your browsing history, your online habits, your preferences, your interests, etc. Furthermore, with this method it is possible to link your real IP address with your cryptocurrency address, and thus track your transactions, your balance, your identity and your activity on the network. Which of course can have serious consequences, such as theft of your funds, blackmail, extortion, harassment, censorship, persecution, etc.

While a WebRTC breach poses a threat and danger to anyone who values their privacy and security online, it is especially harmful to cryptocurrency users, who are often targets of hackers and governments.

As cryptocurrency users, we abide by the fundamental principle of anonymity and decentralization to protect our assets and freedom, but a WebRTC breach can break that barrier and expose us to all types of attacks and threats. Therefore, it is important that cryptocurrency users take measures to prevent and avoid leaks of this type, and thus keep privacy and security intact.

But don't panic, there are several ways to prevent and avoid WebRTC leaks:

✔ Disable WebRTC in your browser: Some browsers, such as Firefox, Chrome and Opera, allow you to disable WebRTC in their options or through extensions. However, this may affect the operation of some websites and applications that use WebRTC, such as Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts, etc.

✔ Use a browser that does not support WebRTC: Some browsers, such as Safari, Internet Explorer and Edge, do not support WebRTC, so they cannot leak your real IP address. However, these browsers may have other vulnerabilities and limitations, and are not compatible with some websites and applications that use WebRTC.

✔ Use a VPN that blocks WebRTC (a topic I will cover in future articles): Some VPNs, such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark, offer you the option to block WebRTC, thus preventing your real IP address from being revealed. In addition, these VPNs provide you with other advantages, such as encrypting your traffic, changing your location, accessing restricted content, etc.

There are multiple tools that offer a variety of tests to evaluate the security and privacy of your web browser. These tests typically focus on identifying ways that websites can leak your real IP address, collect information about your device, and perform browser fingerprinting. Personally, one of the ones I use is: https://browserleaks.com/webrtc, but I recommend that you do your own research to "discover" the most suitable one for your interests.

Remember, WebRTC is a technology that facilitates real-time communication between web browsers, but it can also leak your real IP address, putting your privacy and security at risk, especially if you use cryptocurrencies. It is important that you take measures to prevent and avoid these types of dangers that can pose a great security risk to you as an end user. By understanding these risks, you can take appropriate steps to protect your online privacy and minimize your exposure to potential threats.
