My Psychologist Is Me: A Space To Learn, Grow And Heal From Within.

Tips, reflections and resources on how to take care of your mental health, improve your self-esteem and develop your potential. I do not intend to replace professional help, but rather to complement it and motivate you to be your own psychologist. I hope you like it and that it inspires you.

Personality is one of the most fascinating and complex concepts in psychology and philosophy. It is about the way of being, the set of traits and qualities that identify a person in their way of perceiving, thinking, relating, feeling and behaving. It is what makes a human being equal only to himself and at the same time different from others. It is the result of the interaction between heredity and environment. Heredity endows us with certain biological, genetic and temperamental characteristics that predispose us to act in a certain way. The environment offers us the experiences, stimuli and opportunities that shape and influence us throughout our lives.

The personality is dynamic and plastic. This means that it is not something fixed and immutable, but rather it develops and modifies over time, depending on the circumstances and the decisions we make. The personality is also unique and unrepeatable. No two people have exactly the same personality, not even identical twins. Each person has their own story, their own values, their own interests and their own goals. Its importance lies in the fact that it defines us as individuals and members of society. It influences our self-esteem, self-image, motivation, creativity, intelligence, health, happiness and success. It also determines our way of communicating, learning, working, loving and living with others.

The topic of personality has interested and challenged many thinkers, scientists, and artists throughout history. There are various theories and models that try to explain and classify personality, from the ancient Greeks to modern psychologists. Some of the best known are:

  • The four temperaments of Hippocrates and Galen: sanguine, choleric, melancholic and phlegmatic.
  • Costa and McCrae's Big Five: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism.
  • Jung's psychological types: introvert, extrovert, thinker, feeler, intuitive and sensory.
  • Millon's personality styles: avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive, histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, aggressive-sadistic, masochistic, schizoid, schizotypal, paranoid, and borderline.
  • Eysenck's personality traits: psychoticism, extraversion and introversion, neuroticism and emotional stability.

These and other theories help us understand and describe personality, but they do not exhaust or limit it. Personality is much more than a label or a category. It is a work of art in constant evolution, which reflects our essence and our uniqueness. It is ultimately what we are and what we can be.
