Small apartment kitchen, South San Francisco. 94080.
Amara, Igbo babe, dating Carlos, Brazilian guy. 1 year.
Carlos mama visiting from Brazil for first time.
Amara panicked. "I must cook something impressive."
She decided to cook jollof. Her best jollof. The party jollof with smoke.
Same time, Carlos mama, Dona Lucia, said, "No, I will cook feijoada for my son!"
Two women in one small kitchen. No space. Both speaking English with heavy accent. Both trying to be boss.
Amara: "This kitchen is too small for two queens!"
Dona Lucia: "In Brazil, mother cooks!"
Carlos hid in bedroom playing FIFA. Smart boy.
Amara made jollof. Dona Lucia made feijoada, plus farofa, plus pão.
Whole apartment smelled like Lagos and Rio at war.
Finally, food ready. They set table. Tension.
Carlos came out. Prayed. They ate.
Amara tasted feijoada. Said, "Hmmm! This beans... it tastes like... like..."
Dona Lucia tasted jollof. Eyes wide. Said, "Wow! What is this? Tomato rice? So good!"
Amara said, "It's jollof!"
Dona Lucia said, "In Brazil we have similar - arroz com tomate!"
They started exchanging recipes.
By end of night, Amara teaching Dona Lucia how to make jollof with Brazilian sausage linguiça. Dona Lucia teaching Amara how to make pão de queijo with Agege bread style.
Carlos whispered, "God saved me today."
Dona Lucia before flying back, hugged Amara, said, "You are my daughter now. But please, teach my son to wash plate after eating jollof."
Now Amara and Dona Lucia do video call every Sunday. Cooking together - one in 94080, one in São Paulo.
Moral: Jollof can end any war. Even kitchen war.
