The Laundromat on Las Positas
Jamal worked night shift at the warehouse in Greenville. 31. Always tired.
Every Sunday, 6am, he would go to the laundromat on Las Positas Rd to wash his work clothes before the week started.
Every Sunday, 6am, there was a girl there already. Headphones on, folding tiny clothes. Baby clothes. She never looked up.
For 4 months, they never spoke.
Month 5: He noticed she always had two washers - one for big clothes, one for small baby clothes. Always alone.
Month 6: He started coming with two coffees. He would leave one on top of her dryer. Black, no sugar. She never took it at first.
Month 7: One Sunday, the baby was there. In a car seat, sleeping. The girl looked exhausted.
He didn't leave coffee. He left a small pack of diapers next to it. Size 2.
She looked up for the first time. Eyes red.
She said, "You didn't have to."
He said, "I know."
She said, "Thank you. I'm Sarah."
He said, "I know. I heard the owner call you once. I'm Jamal."
Slow burn.
Month 9: They started folding clothes together. She told him baby daddy left. She was 26, working at Target.
Month 11: Baby started calling him "Ma" because she couldn't say Jamal yet.
Month 13: One Sunday, Sarah wasn't at the laundromat. Jamal waited till 8am. No show.
He was worried. He never had her number.
Monday after work, he went to Target in 94551. Walked every aisle.
Found her at checkout.
He said, "You didn't come yesterday. I was worried."
She said, "Baby was sick. We were at ER."
He said, "Give me your phone."
She gave it. He put his number. And added $100 to her Target gift card balance secretly at his register.
She texted that night: "You put money on my card."
He replied: "Use it to buy something for you, not just baby."
Year 2: Same laundromat, same Sunday 6am. But now three people folding.
Baby - now toddler - folding socks, making a mess.
Sarah said, "Jamal, you know this started because you couldn't talk to a girl for 4 months?"
Jamal said, "I was on slow burn. Some clothes need gentle cycle."
She laughed. Baby laughed.
Outside, the 15 bus passed on Las Positas. Early morning. Empty.
