The Patient in Room 209🏥👻
LUTH, 3am. Nurse Amaka was on night duty. Quiet night.
Only 2 patients on the ward.
Her pager beeped: `Room 209. Patient needs help.`
Problem: Room 209 has been locked for 5 years. No patient.
Amaka called the senior nurse. `Mama, 209 is beeping.`
*Mama:* `Ignore it. It’s the ghost. Go back to sleep.`
Amaka laughed. 4am again: `Room 209. Patient needs help.`
This time with vitals attached: BP 80/50. Pulse 40. Critical.
She couldn’t take it. She took keys, flashlight, and went.
Door creaked open. Dust everywhere. One bed. One patient.
Old man. Oxygen mask. Drip on. Eyes closed.
*Amaka:* `Sir? Sir?`
No response. She checked pulse. Cold.
She ran out screaming.
Morning came. Doctor, police, everybody.
They opened 209. Bed was empty. Dusty. No drip. No oxygen.
But on the pillow: a fresh handprint. Wet.
The old man’s file was there. Name: `Mr. Ade. Died in room 209, 5 years ago. 4:05am. Heart failure. No family.`
From that day, every 4:05am, the monitor in 209 beeps once.
Nurses just write in the log: `Mr. Ade checked in again.`
*Moral:* Some people die alone... and keep waiting for someone to answer.
