Rowing, played an important role in transportation with the opening of the seas, fishermen, traders and whalers made use of oar boats to make a living. The ships with three rows of oars in the Ancient Age were replaced by galleys built in order not to depend on the wind. These ships, which were around 35 meters long, were manned by 150 oarsmen (galiot) with three people in each seat, each using a single oar. In the 16th century, the foundations of rowing as a new sport were laid when passengers on rowing boats made bets among themselves.
Rowing sport categories started to develop between 1830 and 1860 in the islands of the great ocean and in Europe and the USA around the same time. the first races were held in 1872. it has been part of the Olympic program since the very beginning of the modern Olympic Games. 1896 Athens was included in the Olympic program but for some reasons the races could not be held. With the 1900 Paris Olympics, it continues its activities as an Olympic branch until today. In 1892, the International Rowing Federation (Federation Internationale Des Societes D'Aviron, or FISA) was founded by France, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland. FISA was also the first international sports federation.
