In a surprising turn of events, Senegal recently elected its youngest president ever, **Bassirou Diomaye Faye**. At just 44 years old, Faye's victory in March 2024 not only cements his place as Senegal's youthful leader but also makes him the youngest elected president in all of Africa.

Faye's path to the presidency is rather unconventional. He wasn't a seasoned politician climbing the ranks for years. Instead, he comes from a background in tax inspection, where he reportedly championed workers' rights. There are even accounts of him being briefly imprisoned before the election. This experience may have fueled his decision to enter politics and challenge the establishment.

Faye's win is a significant shift for Senegal's political landscape. Running on an opposition ticket, he capitalized on the public's desire for change, particularly in tackling corruption, a persistent issue in the country. His lack of political baggage and outsider status resonated with voters yearning for a fresh perspective. Faye's presidency will be closely watched as he confronts this deeply rooted problem and other challenges facing Senegal, such as economic development and social inequality.

Him becoming the president at his age, has proven that it's not only the old that can rule a nation and it also give an opportunity for fresh ideas to be tried as well. Most African youths from different nations have contested and failed but this opportunity, if utilised well, will open other countries to give the youths a chance.
