Plate That Almost Ended Him

Tunde was a new welder. First week on site.
Oga gave him one simple job: _"Weld this 10mm plate to the beam. Nothing special."_

Tunde was rushing. He didn’t clean the plate. Left paint on it.
Didn’t tack properly. Didn’t check his amps. Just struck arc and started "roading" anyhow.

Mid-weld... _BANG!_
The plate jumped. The arc flashed. His helmet was up.
Sparks everywhere. Oga ran from his office.

Oga didn’t shout. He just picked the plate, pointed to the dirty spot and said:
_"Son, welding is 10% heat and 90% respect. Respect the metal, respect the prep, respect yourself."_

Tunde was ashamed. Thought he’d be fired.

Next day, Oga gave him the same plate again.
This time Tunde cleaned it. Grounded it. Tacked it. Checked settings.
Welded slow. Straight beads. No spatter.

When he was done, Oga inspected and just nodded: _"Now that’s a welder."_

2 years later, Tunde is now the lead hand on that same site.
Trainees call him "Oga Tunde".

He still tells them that story of "the plate that almost ended him."
