Taryn Manning

Taryn Manning, born on November 6, 1978, is an American actress and singer. She gained widespread recognition for her role as Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett in the Netflix original series "Orange Is the New Black," which aired from 2013 to 2019. Additionally, Manning portrayed Cherry in "Sons of Anarchy" from 2008 to 2010.
Her notable film roles include Nola in "Hustle & Flow" (2005) and Janeane in "8 Mile" (2002).

Taryn Manning was born in Falls Church, Virginia, to Bill Manning, a musician, and Sharyn Louise Manning (née White). Her parents divorced when she was two months old, and she was raised by her mother, along with her brother Kellin, in Tucson, Arizona. Manning grew up in a trailer park with her family, and her mother supported them on a strict income.
Despite their financial difficulties, Manning's mother managed to enroll her in karate, dance, and acting classes. When Manning was 12 years old, the family relocated to Encinitas, California. Two years later, her father died by suicide.

Taryn Manning started her acting career in the late 1990s, landing small roles in various film and television productions. She appeared in episodes of TV shows like "The Practice," "Get Real," "NYPD Blue," and "Popular." Manning also had a guest appearance on "Boston Public," with the role specifically written for her. In 1999, she had an uncredited role in "Speedway Junky." Additionally, Manning auditioned for the American version of "Popstars," which aired on The WB in early 2001.

Her film debut came with a role in the romantic drama "Crazy/Beautiful." This was followed by a part in the 2002 feature film "Crossroads," where she portrayed one of two best friends of singer Britney Spears. Manning also had minor roles in "8 Mile" as B-Rabbit's ex-girlfriend, Janeane, and in Peter Kosminsky's "White Oleander." In addition, she appeared in supporting roles in films such as "Lucky 13" and "Debating Robert Lee." Manning had brief appearances in Anthony Minghella's Civil War melodrama "Cold Mountain" (2003) and the romantic comedy "A Lot Like Love" (2005).

Taryn Manning's breakthrough role came in 2005 when she portrayed Nola, a prostitute in Memphis, Tennessee, in the film "Hustle & Flow." Director Craig Brewer specifically chose Manning for the role after seeing her picture in a photography book, believing the actress who played Nola should resemble her. Following this success, Manning appeared in films like "Unbeatable Harold," "When the Nines Roll Over," and "Weirdsville," where she co-starred with Scott Speedman and Wes Bentley.

In 2007, Manning played Ivy Chitty on the short-lived Fox television series "Drive" and appeared in the romantic comedy "Jack and Jill vs. the World." She also had a recurring role as Rita Cherry in the television series "Sons of Anarchy." Manning ventured into music videos, appearing in Butch Walker's "The Weight Of Her" and will.i.am's "Yes We Can."
In 2009, Manning starred in several films including "The Perfect Age of Rock 'n' Roll," "The Devil's Tomb," "The Job," and "Kill Theory." She portrayed Caroline Bishop in "Five Good Years" and joined the cast of "Hawaii Five-0" as the younger sister of the main character Steve McGarrett.

In 2012, Manning starred in the supernatural web series "The Unknown," which premiered on Crackle. Her most notable role came in 2013 when she began portraying Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett in the original Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black." Manning also portrayed Michelle Knight in the Lifetime film "Cleveland Abduction" in 2015.
She participated in Season 16 of the celebrity version of "Worst Cooks in America" and signed on for Coke Daniel's suspense thriller "Karen" in 2020, playing the role of Karen Drexler, a character obsessed with her black neighbors.

In 2001, Taryn Manning auditioned for the musical reality television show "Popstars USA" on the WB. Following this, in 2003, Manning and her brother Kellin formed the band Boomkat. Initially signing a major label deal with Randy Jackson, the band later signed with DreamWorks Records, releasing their debut album "Boomkatalog. One" on March 18, 2003. The album featured two successful singles, "The Wreckoning" and "What U Do 2 Me," with the former hitting No. 1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.

Boomkat's music was also featured in various movies, including "Mean Girls," "Crossroads," "The Hot Chick," "8 Mile," and "The Italian Job." Despite a hiatus and label changes, Boomkat released their second album "A Million Trillion Stars" in 2008, with the lead single "Runaway" premiering in April 2008. They played several shows in Los Angeles in October 2008, promoting the album. Manning recorded a cover of Tom Petty's "Christmas All Over Again" in December 2008.

In 2009, Boomkat released their first official single in years, "Run Boy," accompanied by a music video. Their second album was officially released on March 10, 2009, through independent record label Little Vanilla Records. Manning also collaborated with indie band Dreamers on their song "Lonely World" and appeared in their music video "The Dreamers" as the Ring Master. Boomkat announced they were working on their third studio album in October 2009. Their fifth music video from "A Million Trillion Stars" premiered on MySpace in February 2010.
