The silver key weighed heavier in Emma’s hand than it should have. She glanced at the locked door behind her, then at the stranger’s unreadable face.

Heart pounding, Emma approached the far wall where another door stood. The key slid in effortlessly. When it clicked, the room fell silent, as though the mansion itself was holding its breath.

Inside was no escape—only another chamber, darker and colder. At the center stood a single chair, and on it, a mask of black velvet. A note lay beneath it: “The mask reveals what you deny. Wear it, and the truth will find you.”
Emma’s hands trembled. She realized the key had not opened a path out, but deeper in.
