# 12 Helpful Blogging Statistics You Need to Know

### Introduction

Blogging is a significant commitment that requires a lot of work. What's even more difficult is knowing how to do blogging 'right' so that your post will generate search traffic and rank well on Google. In short, you want to get more bang for your buck with every blog you write.

I have often found myself thinking about how to maximise my earnings from each of my articles. Fortunately, Express Writers had some useful statistics to put things into context and these are what I shall share with you today. I have grouped statistics by theme to help guide your reading.

### Blogging Statistics

#### Posting Frequency

**Fact #1:**Businesses publishing 16 or more blogs a month obtain 3.5 times more web traffic compared to those that publish less than 4 posts.

#### The Optimal Length For a Blog

**Fact #2:**Blog posts should be around 2,000 words to maximise SEO.

**Fact #3:**Longer posts with at least 7,000 words drive almost 4 times more traffic compared to articles that are around an average length of 900-1,200 words.

#### Crafting the Perfect Headline

**Fact #4:**Headlines with 6-8 words increase your click-through rate by 21%.

**Fact #5:**Interestingly, headlines with 10-13 words drive twice as much traffic as shorter headlines.

**Fact #6:**36% of readers prefer what are termed "list-based headlines" (e.g. "10 Things To Do During Lockdown") followed by "how-to" headlines.

#### Structuring Your Blog

**Fact #7:**The more complex the structure, the better. More than 50% of blogs with a complex structure featuring headings 2, 3 and 4 perform highly when it comes to generating search traffic and user engagement. Similarly, 44% of blog posts with a simpler structure (just headings 2 and 3) performed well.

**Fact #8:**Blogs with at least one list for every 500 words of plain text generate 70% more traffic compared to blogs without lists.

#### Using Different Forms of Media

**Fact #9:**Blogs with at least one image see twice as much traffic compared to posts only containing text, and will also receive 30% more shares and 25% more backlinks.

**Fact #10:**Blogs with images get 94% more views compared to blogs without any visuals.

#### Understanding User Behaviour

**Fact #11:**Readers spend 37 seconds on average reading a blog post.

**Fact #12:**43% of reader skim blog posts instead of reading them in their entirety.

### My Key Takeaways

Personally I found the following two statistics most alarming:

**Fact #1:**Businesses publishing 16 or more blogs a month obtain 3.5 times more web traffic compared to those that publish less than 4 posts.

**Fact #3:**Longer posts with at least 7,000 words drive almost 4 times more traffic compared to articles that are around an average length of 900-1,200 words.

I was shocked at just how much you should be blogging (in an ideal world) to generate search traffic. I was also equally surprised at how much of an impact blog length makes on SEO. I was under the mistaken assumption that 1,000-1,200 words was the optimal length but obviously that doesn't seem to be the case. Personally I'll be trying to post much more frequently and start writing longer articles to maximise my results.

In saying this, not everyone will have the capacity to hit 16 blogs per month or to write posts nearing 7,000 words. I don't think I'll hit these targets either but I will gradually work towards them. After all:

**Fact #13:**It takes 3 hours and 55 minutes on average to produce a blog post.
